Confessions Of A Shopaholic: A Review
April 6th 2009 01:47
OK, first of all, this flick is catered for the arty, the feminine and the aspiring metrosexuals. If you are thick, burly, a little low on the EQ side, you would most definitely hate this movie.
I didn’t know much about this movie before I watched it, I like to keep things that way prior to a movie, unless of course there’s like a ton of marketing ploys coming at you like a freight train; in which case, there’s no escaping the brainwashing and pre-framing of your mind. But most, if not all of us would have seen the picture of Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) on a poster or billboard somewhere holding 5-6 shopping bags and looking innocently shocked.
Being a shopaholic, Rebecca Bloomwood is but of course a journalist; low pay and in constant pressure to ‘look the part’ when rubbing shoulders with the actual stars of society are just a few factors which contribute to her ‘problem’.
The film is funny without trying too hard and addresses some serious issues in real America. Having said that however, the Shopaholic novel series (penned by Sophie Kinsella) were actually set in London, not New York as the movie portrays.
The movie has very much the look and feel albeit a more colourful version of “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Bride Wars” and whizzes you through the one and a half hours of the movie pretty effortlessly.
This is the first time I’ve seen Isla Fisher but she is said to have had fame playing “Wedding Crashers” and “Definitely, Maybe”; both films which remain distant lingering memories for me. Anyway, she can be quite slapstick in Confessions and I guess that’s how she carries the movie. Her innocent, malice-less look coupled with her honest mistakes portray the character of Bloomwood well.
The rest of the story seem to just cling on to her as the world, literally, revolves around her.
The storyline can be a bit patchy at times, extra scenes which do not add to the big picture; which is forgivable as it is meant to be a comedy after all. I would just stop short of calling it a romantic comedy.
If you want a clean (no violence, no sex) real-life fairytale with sporadic perks of ‘advice’ and laughs, Confessions is just the movie for you. As long as you are not a jock… Or a tradie…
3 out of 5 stars.
