Star Trek: A Review

May 22nd 2009 16:59
My experience with the Star Trek ‘franchise’, as they call it, is a dismal one to say the best. Vague memories of a bald Patrick Stewart, a dude with pointy ears, a half man half bull character and a black man with a necklace around his eyes come to mind.

So suffice to say I am not a Star Trek fan; let alone a ‘follower’; as many are in the habit of calling themselves.

Anyway, with that out of the way; this is so that you will know what kind of perspective you will be getting this review from.

I watched "Star Trek" mainly because I’ve heard a lot of people say its good. For me, it wasn’t good good per se but just that it wasn’t bad. Sure its action is non-stop (e.g. there is something pivotal going on every second) and its CGI believable but the thing with the CGI in this movie is that most of us have not been into space nor taken up ‘warping’ as a hobby. Safe to say we will not have a presumed image of a specific space, science fiction world...

But nonetheless; the movie went by pretty quickly. For someone with a short attention span like myself; I didn’t tune out of the movie accidentally and even if I did, something crucial enough would have pulled me right back in.

I’ve also heard that ‘Trekkies’ will not be disappointed by the movie but I definitely couldn’t possibly by the faintest touch vouch for that. Klingons, Nero, Romulus, Vulcan, The Enterprise, James T. Kirk and Spock all get a definite mention but I doubt that this will seriously whet a true Star Trek fan's appetite. But then again, what do I know about this sub-culture?

Spock’s background is well explained and the film is really about how the crew that the 1996 TV series portrayed is put together. Sort of a prequel if you will.

It is both exciting and fast-paced and definitely worth the eye-candy and sound effects but other than that; its just another attempt at squeezing an existing familiar story for box office dollars. Where are original films nowadays?

2.5 out of 5 stars.
